Groupon Cancels All Gun-Related Deals

Groupon will no longer be offering deals on all current and scheduled gun-related deals in North America.

The deals for shootings ranges, conceal-and-carry and clay shooting have been placed on "hiatus" while the Chicago-based company reviews "internal standards that shape the deal inventory we feature," Groupon Spokesman Julie Mossler told AOL Daily Finance. "The category is under review following recent consumer and merchant feedback."

The announcement comes in the wake of December's Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Conn. It is not sitting too well with the vendors who were offering those deals.

For example, Michael Cargill, the owner of Austin's Central Texas Gun Works -- whose deal was listed last week -- is calling for a boycott "because the message they're sending is, 'Look, we do not want to support law-abiding citizens taking time out of their schedule to learn the safety surrounding firearms.'"

In addition, last week Cargill was contacted by his Groupon rep to encourage raising the purchase limit to 1,500. But on Friday, that rep called back explaining Groupon's new position.

So, why this sudden stance a month later? That's not so clear.

But it's a move people will notice, and positive PR is something Groupon could certainly use more of.

Miss a call, freak out -- meet the Internet.

San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh reacted -- histrionically, perhaps; emotionally, most assuredly -- to a controversial referee's call late in the NFC Championship Game on Sunday. And a GIF of his moves -- falling to the turf as if struck, while sporting a look of pure agony and slapping his headset off of his head with hand -- is now Internet gold.

See for yourself.

Harbaugh, who will face his brother's Baltimore Ravens in the 49ers' first trip to the Super Bowl in 15 seasons in two weeks, is known for passionate outbursts. Some may call them theatrics, but there's no doubt something he's doing is working. On the Internet.

Harbaugh's 49ers defeated the Atlanta Falcons 28-24 to win a trip to the Super Bowl in Harbaugh's second season as head coach. Harbaugh was reacting to a referee's ruling that a ball that seemed to bounce incomplete was ruled a catch.

N. Texas Sheriff Will Not Enforce Unconstitutional Gun Laws

Collin County Sheriff Terry Box says neither he, or his deputies, will enforce unconstitutional gun laws.

The Cleburne Independent School District on Tuesday night will become one of the first districts in North Texas to consider allowing some teachers to carry concealed guns.

Five police officers already work in Cleburne's 13 schools, but the school board is asking if that's enough to prevent a tragedy like the Newtown, Conn., massacre.

"We're at the very beginning stages of talking about it," said Superintendent Tim Miller. "I don't anticipate any action being taken Tuesday night just because it's a pretty controversial topic."

Around the Johnson County town of 30,000, opinions are split.

Special education teacher Mavis Bryan doesn't like the idea of arming teachers.

"I would go with the armed guards," she said. "I think that would be better because they are more trained than a lay person."

A retired police officer disagreed.

"I feel like to make our children more safe, if it takes a few select teachers to go along with the law enforcement -- because I am retired law enforcement -- then I'm for that," he said.

The superintendent said he personally does not support arming teachers.

"If we're going to put more firearms in the schools, I'd rather put them in the hands of our police and our sheriffs instead of our employees," Miller said.

School board president Brent Easdon said he would vote to allow teachers to pack a pistol if the district can set up a system of proper screening and training.

"We don't want this to be a knee-jerk reaction," Easdon said. "But we want to be proactive and not reactive."

He said he has already heard from people on both sides.

"Some are for it, some are against it," Easdon said.

The Cleburne school district covers 209 square miles and employs 900 people. The student enrollment is 6,800.

Collin County Sheriff Terry Box says he, nor his deputies, will enforce unconstitutional gun laws put in place by whom he calls misguided politicians.

In the statement, Box said the following:

In light of recent events I feel I need to make a public statement of my views on this subject. As the Sheriff of Collin County, Texas, I have for the past 28 years served to protect and keep safe all citizens of our county, recognizing the trust placed in me with this profoundly important responsibility.

Unfortunately, the recent surge in the numbers of innocent victims who have died at the hands of unstable criminals has prompted politicians in Washington to seek to pass laws that would seriously erode the constitutional rights of innocent and law abiding citizens.

Neither I, nor any of my deputies, will participate in the enforcement of laws that violate our precious constitutional rights, including our Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms.

As long as I remain Sheriff of Collin County, I will not participate in the actions of misguided politicians who seek to impede our citizen's right to all of the privileges afforded by our Constitution.

Respectfully,

Terry G. Box
Sheriff, Collin County Texas

The longtime sheriff posted the statement on his personal Facebook page over the weekend after he said  he was asked by hundreds of people urging him to do it.

Box's statement was posted just days after President Barack Obama signed a series of executive orders intended to reduce gun violence.

In a phone conversation with NBC 5 Monday, Box explained further:

"I think anytime we have a national tragedy that lawmakers in Washington and sometimes in Austin try to, what I call, a knee-jerk reaction on trying to make the public feel safe and try to create new laws. There is plenty of laws on the book that are being enforced, I hope we can prevent these tragedies."

The sheriff said nearly 200 people have commented on his Facebook page since posting the statement and that all but a few of them support his message.

Woman Jailed in Florida Over 22-Year-Old Warrant

Robin Hall stepped off of a Disney cruise ship in Brevard county Florida to be greeted by police with a warrant for her arrest for shoplifting a pack of cigarettes 20 years ago.

Connecticut Woman Arrested For Shoplifting...

A Connecticut native's vacation cruise came to an abrupt and unexpected end when she was put in jail over $85 in unpaid court fines from shoplifting charges more than two decades ago.

In 1991, Robin Hall shoplifted cigarettes from a Wal-Mart. She was 18 at the time. In the 22 years since, Hall has put herself through college and now helps design jet engines for Pratt & Whitney.

When Hall, her husband and two children returned from a Disney Dream cruise on Thursday, police from Brevard County in Florida were waiting for her as she got off the boat in Port Canaveral.

Police said Hall failed to pay the $85 in court costs when she was 18, and when they checked the ship's passenger list for terrorists, they found a warrant for her.

"I take full responsibility for what I did, but I do not believe I deserve this," Hall said.

Hall, who has spent the last four days in a Florida jail, insists it's not her fault.

"I just want it to be all over so I can go home," Hall said from jail in Brevard County. "I was pulled to the side and told that I had a warrant."

The Brevard County Jail won't let her post bail because the charge is from a different county and she has to be transferred there. Yet with the long holiday weekend, that might not be until Thursday.
