Elementary students from Georgetown went to Austin asking to make pecan pie the official state dessert.

Of course, the youngsters had a delicious prop to help their lobbying efforts, carrying around a pie for legislators to sample.

"A lot of other states have desserts, but not Texas," a student named Jude said.

"Since the pecan and pecan tree are state symbols, I think it would fit in perfectly," Ashlyn Klausen said.

The lobbying worked -- everyone on the senate administration committee voted to pass the bill.

The full Texas senate should vote soon on measure.

Plans for Big Tex, the iconic symbol of the State Fair of Texas, are taking shape.

Later this week, State Fair representatives will present to the Dallas Landmark Commission a proposed update to Big Tex Circle.

An electrical fire destroyed Big Tex last fall, bringing an end to his 60-year reign as the official greeter to fairgoers.

Dallas design firm Studio Outside released renderings of the plans that show a limestone seating wall surrounding the center ring where Big Tex will stand. The center area would be raised from its current six-foot height to a height of nine to 12 feet and would be filled with cacti or native grasses.

"We, over the years, realized that that is probably the most photographed spot in Texas, at least for 24 days," fair spokeswoman Sue Gooding said. "The mission, the goal that we set forth to [the designers] was we want Big Tex to have a place of honor."

The renderings use the Big Tex design. Plans for the Big Tex himself will be unveiled at a later date. The redesigned version will be 55 feet tall, three feet taller than the original Big Tex, Gooding said.

Six Texas college students were injured when a first-floor porch collapsed at a Gulf Shores, Ala., beach house Monday afternoon, WPMI-TV reports.

At about 4:30 p.m. Monday, the porch buckled and sent more than a dozen college students from TCU and UT tumbling 12-feet to the ground below, WPMI reported.

"The support beams gave out, and the whole porch just collapsed," said TCU student William Bonner, as told to WPMI-TV. "People said they couldn't feel their legs. We were worried they might be paralyzed from the waist down."

Ultimately, all of the injuries were minor, according to Gulf Shores police.

WPMI reported varying accounts that said there were anywhere from 15 to 50 people on the porch when it collapsed.

A family who rented the beach house next door to the college students told WPMI there were "easily 40 people" on the deck when it gave way. The person who rented the house for the TCU and UT students told WPMI that only 15 people were on the porch when it buckled and that it wasn't the weight that caused the collapse, but rather the construction.

Those injured in the collapse have not been identified.

WATCH: Hooters Ball Girl Mistakenly Fields Fair Ball

The woman, whose name hasn't been released, fielded a fair ball.

Spring training is a time during pre-season where players get to practice, play and make mistakes. This year, even the ball girls are getting in on the blunders.

The Philadelphia Phillies and Tampa Bay Rays were in the top of the sixth inning this weekend when Rays' hitter Shelly Duncan hit a ground ball that bounced into left field foul territory.

The ball was ruled fair, but a Hooters ball girl picked it up with her glove and handed it to a fan in the stands.

The embarassing move wasn't a total loss.

"She has no idea that she has interfered with the play," the announcer said. "But she's making a young fan very happy with that ball."

Once she realized her mistake, the woman covered her face with the same glove and sat down. Her name hasn't been released.

This is the second time this week a Hooters girl made this mistake on Bright House Field, where the Phillies play their spring games. On Wednesday, a another ball girl took a fair ball for a foul one in a  game against the Washington Nationals.

A baby injured in a morning house fire in Richardson is expected to be okay.

The mother of the child called 911 to tell fire crews her house was on fire in the 2300 block of Shady Creek Drive around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.

When fire crews arrived, fire and smoke was pouring out of the one-story home. Fire crews were able to get the baby out.

The baby was taken to an area hospital to be checked out, but should be okay, said Richardson Fire Chief Alan Palomba.

The mother wasn't injured, Palomba said.

The house is likely a total loss due to fire and smoke, he said. No cause has yet been determined.

"Smoke Alerts" Bring Conclave Spectating to the Social Media Age

advertisement

While the cardinals gathered in Rome to elect the new pope are bound by centuries-old procedures—writing and counting ballots by hand, burning them in a chimney to communicate the outcome of a vote—those outside the Vatican walls have already put a modern spin on the spectating.

In addition to the various Twitter accounts, like @PapalSmokeStack, and round-the-clock livestreams that will offer far-flung spectators real-time access to election results, there is now a service that will send email and text blasts when the white smoke goes up.

For full world news coverage, visit NBCNews.com.

Popealarm.com, the brainchild of the Fellowship of Catholic University Students, a Denver-based Catholic outreach group, notes that "you could be asleep, or busy doing something and miss the "Habemus Papam!"—the Latin proclamation declared when a pope has been selected.

In an effort to solve that potential problem, the free wesbite will send alerts to users "when the smoke coming out of the Sistine Chapel chimney turns white so you know when a new Pope has been elected."

By late Tuesday morning, just four days after launch, Popealarm.com already had 60,000 registrants, FOCUS spokesman Jeremy Rivera said.

The concpet, thought up by Kevin Cotter, the group's web director, took just days to implement.

"We thought it was worth a try, and did some Google searches to see if anyone else had done it," Rivera said. Other than "Adopt a Cardinal," a German site that randomly assigns users a cardinal to keep in their prayers, the field was wide open.

Days later, after enlisting third-party assistance and slapping up a donations page to help cover the $10,000 cost, they were up and running.

By Tuesday, so many people had signed up for text alerts that site administrators posted a message indicating they they cannot guarantee that all who sign up going forward will be able to receive them. Email alerts, the site notes, are still functioning.

Cardinals were expected to cast their first ballots Tuesday evening (between 11:45 a.m. and 3 p.m. EDT) after taking an oath of secrecy. If any contender wins a two-thirds majority, a new pope can be immediately named, though it's more likely that a successor to Pope Benedict XVI won't be named in the first round.

If the vote does yield a new pope, the ballots will be mixed with chemicals and burned, sending a plume of white smoke out of the chimney of the Sistine Chapel and triggering an explosion of social media, email and cell phone alerts.

If no candidate has two-thirds of the vote, however, the ballots will be burned with another chemical that should send black smoke into the sky and force to cardinals to vote again in successive rounds. (See the full voting schedule here.)

NBC News will be providing a livestream from its "smoke cam" beginning at 12:45 p.m. ET as the world awaits the result from the first vote.

Final Round of Sanders' Child Custody Battle

advertisement

It'll be up to a jury to sort through six days of drama, testimony, and allegations in the child custody battle between Deion and Pilar Sanders.  At the heart of the case: the couple's three children.

Deion Sanders is the final witness is the jury trial over primary custody.  He didn't take the stand until after 9:30, because Pilar Sanders showed up to court a half hour late without explanation.

"Primetime" gets one last chance to give his side of the story to allegations that have come up in court this past week.

"I am who I am. I think I am a great dad. I think I'm Father of the Year," says Deion Sanders.

That's what he wants the jury of seven women and five men to take away from the past six days of testimony in the child custody battle for his three kids.

Sanders Custody Case Enters Final Round

Day six of the drama-filled child custody fight between Deion and Pilar Sanders could bring some closure on Tuesday.

Deion and Pilar Sanders' Monday Court Appearance

The custody battle between Deion and Pilar Sanders continued on Monday. Jurors are expected to have the case Tuesday at noon.

Deion Sanders hopes to be awarded primary custody of his two sons and daughter.

"All the nonsense. All the side stuff: the steroids, abuse allegations.  To say who's the good parent. Side step all of that," says Deion Sanders.

Deion Sanders testified Tuesday that after a fight with Pilar Sanders at their Prosper home in April 2012, when she was arrested and taken to jail, he didn't tell the kids to fill out a police report against their mom or coach the kids what to write.

Deion Sanders says he's not trying to keep the kids from his mother.

"Thank you for everyone praying for me and my children," Pilar Sanders said on her way into the courthouse.

Pilar Sanders' attorneys argue she's not allowed near Deion Sanders' home, and claim the kids have to walk a long distance from the gates near the road up to the mansion.

"I believe the children need both parents. Just like it takes to parents to conceive, it takes to parents to raise. Hopefully that will be possible," Pilar Sanders said.

Pilar Sanders' attorney, Larry Friedman, believes a victory would be if she was awarded primary custody.

"A good outcome would be having access to both parents, with Pilar the sole conservator," Friedman said. "Let's see what happens."

The Sanders' children will not have to testify.

Once Deion Sanders wraps up his testimony, both sides will give closing arguments.  The decision will then be in the hands of the jury.

An off-duty Fort Worth firefighter died from injuries related to a motorcycle crash Monday night.

Firefighter Lylian "Randy" Berry, Jr., 42, of Fort Worth, sustained fatal injuries during the crash.

The crash happened in the 300 block of Sycamore School Road in south Fort Worth, according to the Fort Worth Fire Department. Officials say Berry lived about one mile from the crash site.

A female passenger on the motorcycle, 37-year-old Shymill Murphy, was critically injured in the crash. Fort Worth Fire Deparment said Murphy was in surgery as of 11 p.m. Monday.

Berry was assigned to Fire Station 28 on Everman Parkway in south Fort Worth. FWFD officials say the on-duty crew from that station were the first to arrive on the scene of the crash. Berry and Murphy were transported by MedStar paramedics and members of the crew from Station 28 to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth.

Berry was pronounced deceased shortly after his arrival at the emergency department.

The Fort Worth Fire Department says Berry had been with the department since January 2006. Berry was a certified rescue diver and previously served for several years on the department's swift water/underwater rescue team.

He is survived by two daughters, 19-year-old Desiree and 15-year-old Dominique. Funeral arrangements are pending.

The Fort Worth Police Traffic Investigation Unit is investigating the cause of the crash.
