American Pope Unlikely, Experts Say

American influence on the Papal Conclave that will elect the next pontiff has never been stronger. But the odds of an American becoming pope remain distant at best, Vatican scholars and journalists say.

That's in large part because the United States, with more Catholics than any European country, is already seen as having too strong a hand in global politics and economic matters. So why give us the papacy, too?

"America was a missionary country up to the beginning of the 20th Century, and we like to think of ourselves as the center of the world, but Rome doesn't," said Charles Hilken, a St. Mary's College of California history professor who specializes in papal elections.

Last year, Pope Benedict XVI named three new American cardinals, bringing the country's total to 19, 11 of whom are younger than 80 and thus qualified to vote in the papal election. That's nearly 10 percent of the conclave.

Only Italy, home of the Vatican, has more eligible voters, with 28.

Of the American dark horses, Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York has the best chance to succeed Benedict, who will abdicate this month, observers say.

"Look, the Holy Spirit has his little jokes, as they say in the Curia, so you never know what the conclave will do, and Dolan is certainly the most appealing American candidate, likely the most ever," said David Gibson, a writer for Religion News Service and the author of a biography of Benedict. "But he's still a huge long shot."

The reality is that the U.S. is not where the Catholic Church wants to focus its energy, Gibson said. While popes have always come from Europe, the church's future is widely seen as lying in the Southern Hemisphere: in South America, and in Africa, where membership is booming.

"If they go outside Europe for the first time, Latin America is the best bet," Gibson said.

In that sense, we still could see the first "American" pope, albeit one from Brazil (home of the largest Catholic population, more than that of Italy, France and Spain combined), or Mexico, with the second-largest Catholic population, or even Argentina.

There is also a promising candidate from the north: Cardinal Marc Ouellet, the Canadian-born former Archbishop of Quebec who now works in a powerful position in Rome.

"That's more likely than it going to the U.S., to be quite honest," Hilken said.

American Airlines' Merger Could Come This Week

Scott Gordon, NBC 5 News

People with knowledge of the high-level talks said CEO Tom Horton was pushing for more time and hadn't yet accepted a lesser position with a combined company. One person suggested he was actively working to kill the deal.

American Airlines and US Airways appear ready to announce a merger in the next few days.

One person pushing the merger said that the timeline could be pushed back because of resistance from American executives, but another source close to the Fort Worth-based carrier said negotiations were progressing and appeared to be on-schedule.

Nobody wanted to be named because of the sensitivity of the negotiations.

Under the merger scenario described to NBC 5 and widely reported, US Airways CEO Doug Parker would run the combined airline. American CEO Tom Horton would be named non-executive chairman for a period of one or two years.

Some board members appeared to be pushing for Horton to have a more meaningful role in the new company. His supporters on the board believe he has done a good job guiding the airline through the difficult bankruptcy process.

Horton replaced former CEO Gerard Arpey when American declared bankruptcy in November 2011.

When talk of a merger first surfaced, Horton said he preferred to wait until American exited bankruptcy as a standalone company.

Pressured by creditors, Horton then agreed to consider the idea and entered into confidential talks with US Airways and others.

US Airways executives wooed American's employee groups with offers of higher pay and benefits. AA's union leaders, who have had a testy relationship with management for years, jumped on board with the merger idea.

US Airways' executives have said if they are successful, they would keep the airline's headquarters in Fort Worth. The company would also keep the American brand. The name US Airways would go away.

An episode of "The Steve Wilkos Show" was interrupted on a Montana TV station Monday by a hacker who warned of a zombie apocalypse.

The Montana Television Network said hackers were able to sabotage the station's Emergency Alert service of the station's Great Falls affiliate and told viewers "dead bodies were rising from their graves" and "attacking the living."

KRTV said on its website that the hacked message reached "several" Montana counties. The phony alert was promptly pulled off the air and prompted KRTV to issue an apologetic message on the air and online.

The Great Falls Tribune reported that the "undead" message garnered at least four calls to authorities to check its validity.

The night before the hoax, AMC's zombie drama, "The Walking Dead" was seen by 16.6 million people, Nielsen ratings reported. The graphic novels series that the show is based on has also been featured on The New York Times bestseller list.

Study Tests Whether Patch Can Rid Children of Peanut Allergies

advertisement

A new study at Rady Children's Hospital in San Diego may change the future of peanut allergies for kids.

The study will give participants a skin patch with tiny amounts of peanut in the hopes of desensitizing children who are allergic to peanuts.

The hospital has seen nearly 3,000 children with peanut allergies. The only way to manage the allergy is simply to avoid it, or treat accidental ingestion.

"The new patch therapy could prove to be a breakthrough for the peanut allergy sufferers," said Stephanie Leonard, director of the Food Allergy Center at Rady Children's Hospital in a statement.

About 3 million people in the U.S. suffer from the allergy and only 20 percent of children grow out of the allergy, according to the hospital.

To participate, patients must be healthy and at least six years old, have eaten peanuts and had a reaction, and currently following a strictly peanut-free diet.

Here is more information on the study.

Investigators Suspect Fired LAPD Officer Fled to Mexico

Irvine Police Department

These photos of Christopher Dorner were taken on Jan. 28, 2013, at an Orange County hotel, according to Irvine police. Days after these pictures were captured, Dorner allegedly began a revenge-motivated shooting spree, sparking a region-wide manhunt for the former LAPD officer.

Former LAPD officer Christopher Dorner — the suspect in three killings that have targeted law enforcement and the subject of a continuing manhunt — was suspected last week of fleeing to Mexico, according to a federal court document.

The criminal complaint filed in federal court on Feb. 7 charges Dorner with fleeing to avoid prosecution. It states that there was reason to believe he had crossed the border into Mexico.

Numerous False Leads Followed in Dorner Manhunt

Police have followed numerous false leads across Southern California to try to find Christopher Dorner. Meanwhile, a federal affidavit suggests he could have crossed the border to Mexico. Robert Kovacik reports from downtown Los Angeles on Feb. 11, 2013.

Federal Criminal Complaint Suggests Dorner Fled to Mexico

A federal complaint against murder suspect Christopher Dorner says he is on the move. Authorities suggest he is no longer in Big Bear, and has fled to Mexico. Investigators are still following all leads in California and in the States. Joel Grover reports for the NBC4 News at 5 p.m. on Feb. 11, 2013.

An affidavit included in the complaint (PDF) was written by U.S. Marshals Service Inspector Craig McClusky the same day that the search for Dorner led to his burned-out truck in the mountain resort of Big Bear.

McClusky recounted the Irvine Police Department's request for assistance from the U.S. Marshal Service in finding Dorner after he became a suspect in the Feb. 3 killing of Keith Lawrence and Monica Quan, who is the daughter of an LAPD official mentioned by Dorner in a manifesto that details his alleged revenge plot.

McClusky described "the recent observations of a suspect matching Dorner's description attempting to flee to Mexico," and stated "there is probable cause to believe that Dorner has moved and traveled in interstate and foreign commerce from California to Mexico" to avoid prosecution.

The document also states that U.S. Marshals were tracking a Dorner associate identified only as "J.Y.," who had been spotted in Costa Mesa.

The search for Dorner continued in Big Bear on Monday, even as police followed multiple sightings of the former officer that turned out to be false.

Also on Monday, the Riverside County District Attorney's office filed a charge of murder against Dorner in the shooting death of Officer Michael Crain, who was killed in what authorities have described as an ambush. Crain was shot Thursday while he and his 27-year-old trainee partner were sitting at a traffic light near the Riverside Freeway in a shooting that police described as an ambush.

"We felt the state of the evidence dictated there was no reason to withhold filing charges," Riverside County District Attorney Paul Zellerbach said. "He's a felon at large."

The Los Angeles Police Department on Sunday announced a $1 million reward in the case. More than 600 tips have been received, according to the LAPD.

Thousands Lined Up for Ex-Navy SEAL Funeral Procession

advertisement

A day after ex-Navy SEAL sniper Chris Kyle was memorialized at Cowboys Stadium, thousands have lined up in roadways and overpasses to pay their respects to him for a 200-mile procession in Texas.

Residents of Midlothian, a city in North Texas where Kyle was a long-time resident, are sending him off like a hometown hero. Flags are lining the route to the slain former Navy SEAL's final resting place in Austin.

"I think it's wonderful that they're honoring this man. So I think it's, I think it's beautiful," says Midlothian resident Gina Lowman.

"It's a small town so everybody knows and everybody cares for everyone, even if they don't know each other they don't hesitate to help," says Midlothian resident Ana Juarez.

Police say military personnel, first responders and the Patriot Guard will escort the procession.

Dan Mathys is one of the more than 200-plus Patriot Guard Riders invited by Kyle's family to take part in the memorial.

"Chris Kyle's mission is the biggest mission we've ever done," Mathys said. "We've done big missions in the past. We hear riders are coming in from all over the country. Florida, Montana, let alone the military and the public being invited to this memorial service is something we've never seen before."

For full U.S. news coverage, visit NBCNews.com.

Thousands of people, military and non-military, honored Kyle at a two-hour memorial service at Dallas Cowboys Stadium in Arlington on Monday.

Friends and military service members described him as a dedicated family man known for his sense of humor, compassion, selflessness and generosity.

Kyle earned a reputation as one of the military's most lethal snipers during four tours of duty in Iraq. His wartime account, "American Sniper," was a best-seller.

In a news release Saturday, Midlothian Police Chief Carl Smith said the procession for Chris Kyle will begin at about 8 a.m. Tuesday at the Midlothian ISD's multipurpose stadium at 1800 South 14th Street.

The procession will take U.S. 287 to Interstate 35E to Texas State Cemetery in Austin where Kyle will be laid to rest.

Morning commuters can expect delays and police are asking onlookers to use access roads or overpasses to watch the procession instead of stopping along the highway.

A livestream of the procession to Austin started at about 8 a.m. central time. At times, the signal may appear distorted, delayed, or go to no video. Please be patient to see if video returns.

Police Updates on Prisoner Escape

NBC 5 will live stream a press conference from Grapevine PD about the escaped prisoner starting at 10:30 a.m.

Police officers in Grapevine have begun a manhunt for a prisoner that stabbed a Miami-Dade Police officer and escaped custody.

Grapevine police say two Miami-Dade officers were transporting prisoner Alberto Morales from Las Vegas, after he was apprehended somewhere in Nevada, to Miami to face charges. Grapevine police did not know which of the many charges Morales faces would be decided in Miami.

The officers had a connecting flight from DFW to Miami, but, according to police, the Morales began acting strangely on the previously flight.

Officials believe the Miami-Dade officers rented a small SUV and were going to drive the rest of the way to Miami with Morales rather than put him on another plane.

Around 11 p.m., the officers and Morales were in the parking lot of a Walmart at 1601 West Highway 114 when one of the officers got out of the vehicle and went into the store to get supplies for the journey to Miami.

Police say Morales was able to take off his eye glasses, break off the frame, and use the sharp, broken end as a blade to attack the lone officer guarding him, stabbing that officer once in the chest and three times in the back before fleeing.

The injured officer was transported to Parkland Hospital and is undergoing surgery, but is expected to recover.

A large manhunt is underway, involving multiple agencies, as Morales is a violent offender and considered dangerous.

At the time of escape, it's believed Morales was wearing a belly band with his hands shackled to it. Police believe he may still be in shackles.

"He is considered dangerous at this time and he is still at large, so we're seeking the public's assistance in finding him," Grapevine Police spokesman Lt. Barry Bowling said. "As far as we know he may still be in shackles, and the clothing description we had at the time we got the report was that he was in some grey shorts and a blue shirt."

"We don't think he could have gotten too far," Bowling said. "We're concerned about where he might be since he's at large and we do think he's still very dangerous."

Due to the ongoing search for Morales, Grapevine-Colleyville ISD announced they would take extra precautions for safety, including increased police patrols around GCISD schools and an "increased presence of police and district officials."

Information obtained from the Miami-Dade inmate information portal showed charges of multiple counts of armed burglaries and/or assaults with deadly weapons. Grapevine police did not detail the charges Morales was facing when he would arrive in Miami.

NBC 5 has crews on the scene to gather more information. As this is a developing story, details may change.
